Character: Amaterasu
Series/Fandom: Okami
Deviance: 2+ Amaterasu can talk and can transform into a human. She’s also taken post-game, having returned to Nippon to find everything as it was before—demons running about, evil and darkness spreading across the land, the whole package.

Age: Indefinite, though as a wolf she appears to be about four and as a human she appears to be mid-twenties.
Gender: Female.
Species: Shinto goddess (wolf and human in appearance).

Appearance: Human form:

Wolf form:

Her appearance largely depends on the viewer, whether she’s in human form or wolf form. Her true appearance as a wolf is that of a white wolf with red markings around her eyes, forehead, shoulders and back. She also seems to have wing-like appendages on her shoulders and ankles, and a weapon—either a mirror, a rosary, or a sword—floating above her back.

However, for those who do not believe in the power of gods, or just generally don’t have psychic abilities or an open mind, they will see her as a simple, unremarkable white wolf.

Her true appearance as a human is that of a beautiful young woman with white hair, red eyes and red markings around her eyes and forehead, and she will be wearing a patterned kimono. She also seems to glow. Again, for those who don’t believe or don’t have the abilities necessary, they’ll just see a young woman, without the red markings or the glow.

Psychology: Amaterasu is everything you would expect of the Mother of Everything—she is kind, compassionate, benevolent, generous, and generally loves all living things. She has an innate need to help people and things in need of it; if she sees a dying plant she will restore it, if she sees a person being attacked by demons, she will defend them. She also has a certain affinity for animals, and has a tendency to feed them whenever and wherever she finds them.

As a goddess, Amaterasu can be rather stern and distant, but she is never prideful or arrogant. She understands her place in the universe, and also understands the necessity of death and destruction. She does not like killing, but she will do it to defend life and living things. She is also fiercely loyal to her subjects and to her friends. She doesn’t particularly care if you believe in her specifically, so long as you have faith in life. Similarly, she understands that she has no dominion over people and things from other lands, but that’s just fine with her. She’s content to take care of Nippon and its inhabitants.

Amaterasu also has a playful side. In her wolf form, she can sometimes be very dog-like and more than willing to just play around for awhile. She’s curious and loves to meet new people. She likes for people to be happy, after all. She also has a tendency to play harmless tricks on people, mostly just to surprise them. However, she also has a wolf’s sensibilities. She’s straightforward and can be rather blunt at times, and her patience for foolishness only lasts so long. She doesn’t like it when people procrastinate or shirk their duties, and if she’s annoyed with you she’ll let you know, one way or another. She also likes for people to solve problems and do things on their own. It’s not so much that she wants to test people; more that she wants them to be able to stand on their own two feet. She is a guardian, a helper, and a defender of her subjects, but she can’t and won’t cure all the problems of the world. That is for people to do.

Finally, Amaterasu is steadfastly aligned against evil. Just because she understands the need for evil and darkness doesn’t mean she’ll let it go unchecked. If she meets with evil, she will do all in her power to put a stop to it. At the same time she can tell the difference between evil people and evil actions. Evil actions will be discouraged and potentially forgiven; at the very least, she will try to understand why a person has committed the evil act. She’s all about forgiveness, after all. Evil people—truly evil people, the kind who needlessly destroy life—cannot and will not be forgiven. If she senses this kind of evil, anywhere, at any time, she will go well out of her way to put a stop to it.

General Skills/Abilities: She’s a godmodder. Literally. She is the sun goddess, and so draws her power from the sun; thus her abilities wax and wane depending on the sun’s strength. Similarly, her god powers wax and wane depending on how many people believe in her, and how strongly.

Her main ability is something known as the Celestial Brush. This is quite literally a sometimes-invisible Japanese calligraphy brush with which she can “paint” things into existence with brush and ink. When she uses the Brush, time stops momentarily, during which she paints the desired effect; as soon as she is finished, time starts up again. There are 13 Celestial Brush techniques in total, each one ruled over by a god or goddess in animal form, and each one taken from the Chinese zodiac. The techniques are as follows:

Sunrise—ruled over by Amaterasu herself, this technique gives her the ability to bring out the sun, no matter if it’s day or night. She won’t be able to use this on the Astral Plane, much to her dismay.

Rejuvenation—ruled by Yomigami, the Dragon God of Restoration, this technique allows Amaterasu to restore things that are missing or broken.

Power Slash—ruled over by Tachigami, the Rat God of Severance, this is exactly what it sounds like; a powerful slashing technique that can cut anything in half, from trees to rocks to enemies.

Greensprout—ruled over by the Hanagami triumvirate of Sakigami, Hasugami, and Tsutagami—the Monkey Gods of Blossoms, Lotuses and Vines, respectively—this allows Amaterasu to create and manipulate trees, flowers, lilypads (on which she can walk) and vines.

Cherry Bomb—ruled over by Bakugami, the Boar God of Explosive Force, this is a powerful technique that allows Amaterasu to create a bomb. Yes, you read that right.

Waterspout, Whirlpool and Deluge—ruled over by Nuregami, the Snake God of Water, these techniques allow Amaterasu to manipulate water, whether it’s from a river, a bucket or the rain. However, she is not able to simply call water into existence; the water needs to already be present.

Crescent—ruled over by Yumigami, the Rabbit God of the Moon, this is like the Sunrise technique in that it allows Amaterasu to call out the moon. This is another technique she will not be able to use on the Astral Plane.

Galestorm, Whirlwind—ruled over by Kazegami, the Horse God of Wind, this allows Amaterasu to manipulate and summon the wind to do her bidding.

Inferno, Fireburst—ruled over by Moegami, the Rooster God of Fire, this allows Amaterasu to manipulate fire. Fireburst in particular allows her to create fire from nothing.

Veil of Mist, Mist Warp—ruled over by Kasugami, the Ram God of Mist, this technique actually has little to do with literal mist. Veil of Mist allows Amaterasu to slow time for everyone nearby, while still allowing her to move at her normal speed. Mist Warp allows Amaterasu to teleport.

Catwalk—ruled over by Kabegami, the Cat God of Walls, this technique lets Amaterasu literally walk up walls.

Thunderstorm, Thunderbolt—ruled over by Gekigami, the Tiger God of Lightning, this allows Amaterasu to manipulate lightning and electricity. Thunderbolt in particular allows her to summon lightning from nowhere.

Blizzard, Ice Storm—ruled over by Itegami, the Ox God of Ice, this allows Amaterasu to manipulate ice. Ice Storm lets her summon ice from nowhere.

Aside from the Celestial Brush, Amaterasu also has many abilities befitting a creator god, a warrior, and a wolf. Everywhere she walks, flowers and grass grow behind her. She is very fast, very intelligent, can jump very high, walk across water and fire, has incredible senses, and can dig through stone. She also has the ability to communicate on some level with animals and plants. With certain items, she can become temporarily invulnerable. Through her godly abilities, a wolf’s sense, and a woman’s intuition she can generally sense evil and ill intent, and will react to it accordingly—but this also means that she can sense the goodness in people’s hearts. Amaterasu also has the ability to shrink herself to about the size of an ant. Lastly, she is highly skilled at fighting with the mirror (used as a shield or as a sort of discus) the rosary (used as a whip, or the individual beads can be used as projectiles) and the sword, as well as with teeth and claws.

Amaterasu also has something called a Celestial Bag, which is essentially a dimensional bag that holds a lot more than seems possible (bigger on the inside and all that). In it she holds the items that she isn’t currently using, as well as the foods she eats (everything from oranges to dumplings). If the Celestial Bag is filled with food, or if Amaterasu has a special item known as a Golden Peach, then even if she is killed she will quickly return to life. Afterwards the bag is emptied of food, though the items remain.

General Weaknesses: Asian gods tend to be a bit different than standard European gods, particularly in that they can indeed be killed. Amaterasu is immortal, but as long as she is in a physical form, she can be killed if the opponent is strong enough. Also if Amaterasu’s Celestial Bag is not full when she is killed, she will die “permanently.”

As a goddess, Amaterasu’s strength depends on the beliefs of other people. If the people’s faith in her is strong, then so is she, and vice versa. This means that Amaterasu often has to prove herself. If she meets someone who does not believe in her, does not have an open mind, or has no psychic abilities to speak of, then she will appear to them (depending) as an unremarkable white wolf or a similarly unremarkable young woman. She will still have her abilities, though they will likely be somewhat lessened. Only when that person has begun to believe in her as a goddess, or when they open their minds, will they be able to see her as she truly is—and only then will Amaterasu be at her full strength.

Amaterasu is also quite weak against darkness, particularly if she is unable to summon the sunshine. During an eclipse her power wanes quite substantially; same with pitch darkness. Spending too long on the Astral Plane, where there is no sun, will undoubtedly weaken her after a time. During this time it is also possible for her to lose her Celestial Brush abilities one by one, or all at once, though it is possible for her to get them back.

Amaterasu is also weak to cursed zones, which are specific to her reality. These are rather self-explanatory—cursed areas of the world which, when she enters them, remove all of her Brush techniques and slowly drain her of her life. They are also full of demons and monsters.

Finally, Amaterasu's Brush techniques are dependent on her supply of ink. Each time she uses a technique, some of her ink runs out. This refills over time, but if Amaterasu completely runs out of ink she will temporarily lose her god abilities and will appear as a normal wolf/human until the ink restores itself.

History: SPOILERS ALERT.

First, there was nothing. Then there was Amaterasu.

Amaterasu is the creator of the world (or at least Nippon), and so has been around since before it existed. After creating the world and generally making sure that all was well, she returned to the Celestial Plain, a sort of Heaven where the Celestial Beings and the gods reside.

Things quickly went wrong, however. The Moon Tribe, a race of people inhabiting the moon, supplied the Celestial Plain with the Ark of Yamato, a ship with which they could travel between the Plain, the Earth, and the stars. Unbeknownst to anyone, the Ark was actually a prison confining Yami, the Lord of Darkness, as well as all his demonic minions. The demons broke out and began wreaking havoc on the Celestial Plain. The gods, Amaterasu included, scattered into the stars, and the Celestial Beings all piled into the Ark—unaware of the monsters still imprisoned. The demons killed everyone aboard save one—a member of the Moon Tribe known as Waka, who fought alongside Amaterasu during the battle on the Celestial Plain.

The Ark crashed to Earth in a lake in northern Nippon and the demons still on board escaped, along with Yami, and they began wreaking havoc across the land. Yami remained imprisoned, but his minions were able to carry out his bidding. After awhile, it simply became the norm to encounter demons when traveling through Nippon.

It was around then that a terrible tradition began in the small Kamiki Village. Every full moon a white arrow would pierce the roof of a selected maiden. The arrow was a way of choosing a sacrifice to Orochi, the eight-headed demon who had taken up residence in the nearby Moon Cave. In exchange for the sacrifice, Orochi would not destroy the village. At the same time, a young tree spirit called Sakuya had arrived in Kamiki, hoping to one day become strong enough to protect the village from evil.

Then, a hundred years ago, something changed. A white wolf appeared on the outskirts of the village. This was Amaterasu, disguised as a white wolf, but the people of the village had lost their faith and could not see her for what she was. They dubbed the wolf Shiranui, believing it to be a messenger of Orochi, and drove it off whenever they encountered it. However, Shiranui continued to keep watch over the village, as though waiting for something.

The full moon came and the white arrow pierced the roof of the sake brewer, Nami, the beloved of the local swordsman, Nagi. Nagi was enraged by Orochi’s impudence and swore to save Nami and everyone in the village by defeating Orochi. He took the sacred sake meant as a gift to Orochi and dressed himself to look like Nami, then went to the Moon Cave to challenge Orochi. After getting the demon drunk on the sacred sake, he fought against Orochi, but his sword seemed to have no effect against the powerful demon.

Just when hope seemed to be lost, Shiranui arrived. Amaterasu used her Celestial Brush to help Nagi, performing all manner of miracles. Although they were unable to defeat Orochi, Nagi and Shiranui were finally able to seal Orochi away using Nagi’s sacred sword, Tsukuyomi. However, the battle had taken its toll. Shiranui was badly injured, so much so that its white fur was stained red. Nagi carried Shiranui back to the village, where the inhabitants praised the wolf for its bravery. Shiranui died surrounded by the people of Kamiki Village. Afterwards they built a shrine to Nagi and Shiranui, in which statues of the two heroes could guard the village for all time. Amaterasu, exhausted by the fight, went to sleep within Shiranui’s statue and remained there for a hundred years. In the meantime, the village prospered and never again had to worry about Orochi, as the influence of the demons all but disappeared. The tree spirit, Sakuya, grew more powerful as her tree grew taller, and took to protecting the village against evil. She also sent out guardian saplings to all the regions of Nippon so she could keep an eye on things.

A hundred years later, Susano, a descendent of Nagi, accidentally released Orochi when he pulled free the sword, Tsukuyomi. Evil returned to the area and Yami’s strength grew once more. Sakuya lost contact with her guardian saplings and with the last of her ability was able to protect Nagi and Shiranui’s shrine from the growing darkness. She then called upon Amaterasu, who awakened from her 100-year sleep severely weakened and with all of her Brush techniques lost. She was quickly greeted by Sakuya, who informed her of the situation, and by Issun—a pint-sized, arrogant, wandering artist who was also searching for the 13 Celestial Brush techniques.

Amaterasu, with Issun as a guide, quickly went about restoring the world. She regained her ability to call the sun, to cut things, and to restore things that are lost or broken almost immediately, and went about restoring life to Kamiki Village. The inhabitants, who had turned to stone, were brought back to life and Orochi’s presence was banished from Kamiki. Amaterasu then met with Susano, the town drunkard who was in love with the sake brewer, Kushi. Susano was a ne’er-do-well, but he was proud of his ancestry, and claimed that he wanted to defeat the demons that had returned to Nippon—though he seemed to be plagued by guilt, for some reason. Sakuya then informed Amaterasu about the guardian saplings, saying that if they were restored to their original power, the world would return to normal. So Amaterasu and Issun set out to find the guardian saplings, as well as the remaining lost Brush techniques.

The pair traveled the world, slowly driving away the cursed zones, fighting off demons and finding the Brush techniques one by one. In Agata forest, they met a mysterious man calling himself Waka, who claimed to know Amaterasu from the past—though she couldn’t remember him. He fought against her to prove how much she had been weakened and then departed, leaving them with a small prophecy.

Amaterasu and Issun traveled onward, helping people along the way and slowly building up the people’s faith in the power of the gods. Along the way they kept meeting up with Susano, who was now suffering from terrible nightmares, as well as Waka who remained mysterious and prophetic. They successfully defeated two of the major demons corrupting the land—the Spider Queen and Crimson Helm, banishing the cursed zones the monsters had created. Around this time came the full moon, falling on the 100th anniversary of the defeat of Orochi. On that very night, the white arrow appeared, and pierced the roof of Kushi’s house. Susano was devastated and drank all of the sacred sake Kushi had brewed, then locked himself in his house. From there he told the inhabitants what he had done—removed the sword of Nagi and thus released the demon Orochi, dooming the whole world. Kushi was the only one to readily forgive Susano, saying that she believed that he would save them all. She then departed to prepare herself to be sacrificed to Orochi.

Not ones to just sit by, Amaterasu and Issun decided to intervene. They stole the rest of the sacred sake and caught up with Kushi as she was trying to leave. Kushi insisted that they bring her to the Moon Cave and they agreed. However, upon arrival, Amaterasu and Issun found themselves unable to enter, and Kushi was quickly snatched away. Waka arrived and, using an ancient talisman, undid the seal on the entrance to the cave, commanding Amaterasu to do as she was meant to do.

Amaterasu and Issun navigated their way through the Moon Cave until they finally reached Orochi. After getting the eight-headed demon on Kushi’s sake, they began to fight him. Just as they were about to defeat it, Orochi suddenly became unnaturally powerful. He was about to devour Kushi when who should arrive but Susano, wielding the sword of Nagi.

Together with Susano, Amaterasu was finally able to defeat the demon. But immediately after its death, a dark shape arose from its body and fled northward, an omen of danger to come. Susano and Kushi returned to the village, while Amaterasu and Issun continued on their journey.

They made their way to the capital, Sei-an city, to find that the emperor had been stricken with sickness, and the whole city had been covered with a toxic green mist. Queen Himiko had also shuttered herself away, and the Water Dragon—a spirit that was supposed to protect the coast—had gone mad and was attacking people and ships. In the city they met the priestess Rao, who told them that the best way to save the city was to find the Fox Rods, supposedly locked away on a ship sunk by the Water Dragon. Unable to get to the emperor to find out what was happening, the pair left the city for the coast, where they met again with Rao. Together, they made their way into the sunken ship. They were unable to find the Fox Rods, and the Water Dragon soon attacked them, forcing them to flee.

Afterwards they were finally able to make their way into the emperor’s palace when Amaterasu shrunk herself to the size of an ant and slipped through a crack in the wall. Now about Issun’s size, she and Issun found their way through the palace to the emperor himself, where they saw that the green mist was in fact emanating from the emperor’s body. They therefore allowed themselves to be swallowed in order to find the source of the mist. Inside the emperor they found one of Yami’s foremost demons, the creature known as Blight. As soon as Blight had been dispatched, the mist disappeared and the emperor returned to full health. However, like with Orochi and the demons before him, a black shape rose up from Blight’s body and fled northward.

The city now restored to its natural state, Amaterasu and Issun were able to finally meet with Queen Himiko, who explained to them that the answer to the Water Dragon dilemma rested with the Dragonians, who lived under the sea. She also explained about Oni Island—an evil, mobile island, the source of which needed to be destroyed. Queen Himiko promised to do everything in her power to locate the island, and told the heroes that the only way to access the island was with the Water Dragon’s help. With no choice left, Amaterasu and Issun went out to the coast. With the help of a dolphin named Orca, Amaterasu and Issun were able to go underwater to access the Dragon Palace.

There they met Otohime, who told them that the Dragon Orb was the true key to getting to Oni Island, and that the Orb was currently in the stomach of the Water Dragon. Amaterasu and Issun left the Palace and found the Water Dragon, allowing it to swallow them. Inside they found the Dragon Orb and the cause of the Water Dragon’s madness—the Fox Rods, deeply embedded in the Water Dragon’s stomach. Amaterasu retrieved both items and escaped the Water Dragon, though the stress was too much for the Water Dragon to handle. It died and sank into the depths.

Almost immediately, the Dragon Orb showed a vision of what the pair thought was the future—Rao was going to be attacked by a fox-like monster. The pair quickly returned to coast with the Orb and the Rods in tow, and found a secret passageway from Rao’s temple into Queen Himiko’s palace. As Queen Himiko was about to pinpoint the location of Oni Island, Rao arrived and revealed herself to be a demon fox, who had been impersonating Rao the entire time. She took the Fox Rods and killed Himiko, then fled to Oni Island. Himiko, with her last strength, took on the form of a ghost and told Amaterasu the location of the Island. Back at the coast, Otohime transformed herself into the Water Dragon and made a bridge from the coast to the Island.

Amaterasu and Issun fought their way through Oni Island all the way to the source of its evil—the demon fox, which had transformed itself into the Ninetails. The heroes defeated the Ninetails and, like before, a dark shape fled northward from its body.

Waka then appeared to the pair and told them of the danger lurking in the north. Amaterasu and Issun returned to Shinshu Field and from there were transported to Kamui in the far north. They picked their way through the snow fields until they were challenged by a villager from Wep’keer, where all the people are able to transform themselves into wolves. The villager’s name was Oki, and he had with him a sacred sword, which he wanted to grant him the power to destroy evil. The pair defeated Oki and he disappeared.

Once in the village, they learned that a young girl had gone missing in the forbidden Yoshpet forest. Amaterasu and Issun navigated their way through the dangerous forest to its heart—a stump in which the Poncles, tiny creatures of which Issun was one, resided. Therein they learned of the Spirit Gate, into which the girl from Wep’keer had disappeared. Amaterasu and Issun went to investigate the Spirit Gate, only to find that Oki had forced it open, hoping to save the girl. Amaterasu and Issun followed and found themselves a hundred years in the past.

Amaterasu and Issun were then forced to recreate the legend of Nagi and Shiranui, though more was at stake this time, and the girl and Oki were nowhere to be found. The pair eventually found themselves facing Orochi once more. Oki tried to interfere but was knocked away. Amaterasu and Issun managed to defeat Orochi along with Nagi and the original Shiranui’s help. They then rescued the missing girl and returned to Kamui with Oki.

Upon returning to Wep’keer, they learned that a Day of Darkness was coming during which the sun would be eclipsed by the moon. At that time, the village would freeze and all its inhabitants would die, unless the girl who had been missing could chant a spell that would make the nearby volcano keep the village warm until the sun returned. They also learned of the Ark of Yamato, which had fallen to Earth many centuries ago and was now frozen in a lake at the foot of the mountains. Meanwhile, a terrible blizzard had been blowing down out of the mountains which would make even that spell useless. The villagers explained that twin demons had taken up residence at Wawku Shrine, high in the mountains. Oki disappeared again around this time, and Amaterasu and Issun entered the mountains, heading for the shrine.

Within the shrine, Amaterasu found the thirteenth and final Brush technique. They met up with Oki, who had learned his lesson and genuinely wanted to help them. Together, along with the original Shiranui who had arrived mysteriously, they were able to defeat the demons Lechku and Nechku—but again, dark shapes rose from their bodies. And down the mountain, the Ark of Yamato had arisen from the lake.

Amaterasu now had one final thing she had to do, and that was to defeat Yami once and for all. She crossed the bridge up to the Ark, along with Waka. Issun was forced to stay behind as the Celestial Envoy. Inside the Ark, Amaterasu met the demons she had defeated before, and defeated them all again, one by one. At last she was able to face Yami, but at the start of the fight he cast her into darkness and stripped her of her Brush techniques.

The fight was long and hard, and just as it looked as though Amaterasu would be defeated, Waka arrived and held Yami at bay, telling Amaterasu of his role in the arrival of the Ark on Earth. Yami defeated Waka and was about to turn on Amaterasu, when suddenly, back on Earth, Issun did his job as Celestial Envoy. He had traveled as far as he could, spreading the story of Amaterasu, and restoring the people’s faith in her. Their collected faith made her more powerful than ever, and she was at last able to defeat Yami. She and Waka then rode the Ark back to the Celestial Plain, with the blessings of all of Amaterasu’s believers.

Unfortunately, the Ark never arrived. Amaterasu somehow found herself back in Kamiki Village, with no Waka or Issun in sight, and the cursed zones somehow spreading once more. There was also a strange shop in the village that had never been there before, and when Amaterasu went inside to investigate, she was welcomed to the Machine.

Canon Bump: Since starting the game, Amaterasu has been canon-bumped to the just after the fight with the Spider Queen. She is exploring Agata before going on to the Taka Pass.

Reality Description: Amaterasu is, for now, limited to Kamiki Village and the surrounding areas, including the Shinshu Field and Hana Valley.

Kamiki Village is a tiny village in rural Japan, dominated by an enormous and powerful sakura tree and guarded by the tree spirit, Sakuya. Sakuya’s tree connects all of Nippon via her guardian saplings; there are several of these, one for each region. Kamiki is peaceful, its residents are kind, and there is always the scent of cherry blossoms in the air. It is the location of a shrine to Nagi and Shiranui, wherein Amaterasu can access a small portion of the spirit world. Kamiki is something like Amaterasu’s base of operations, and she has a deep love for the village and its residents.

Beyond Kamiki is Shinshu Field, which is usually a wide green field and is the location of one of Sakuya’s saplings. There is also a small river that cuts through the field from out of Hana Valley and on into Agata Forest. One may spot the occasional traveler or merchant here, as well as Demon Scrolls. These scrolls are sentient scrolls which have demons and monsters living inside them; the scrolls tend to chase people around, and if they catch someone, draw them into a strange pocket dimension from which there is no escape except upon defeating all of the demons inhabiting the scroll. It is also the location of the Moon Cave, a forbidden area wherein the demon Orochi is sealed by the sword Tsukuyomi. Aside from that, though, the field is usually peaceful and beautiful.

However, the field has been returned to its early-game state—it is covered in cursed zones, which have reduced Sakuya’s sapling to a little dying sprout, and the Moon Cave has once again been taken over by Orochi. Any people in the field when the cursed zones arrived have been turned to stone, and all of the trees and plants are dead or dying. The water in the river has turned to thick sludge. Amaterasu will have to navigate around the cursed zones in order to find a way to restore Shinshu to its natural beauty.

The third area that Amaterasu can access is Hana Valley, located just beyond Shinshu. This is also usually a beautiful area, and is also dominated by a guardian sapling. It is the location of the spring that is the source of the Shinshu river, as well as a beautiful mural of the sun and the guardian sapling.

Like Shinshu, it has returned to its early-game state; the whole place is dead and dying, and cursed trees that throw things at passerby have sprouted all over the place. To restore the valley and banish the cursed zones in Shinshu, Amaterasu will have to find the guardian sapling—also a sad little sprout for now—and make it grow.

A note on the reality deviance: unlike in the game, Amaterasu is able to speak and transform to human, which means she can actively communicate with the NPCs, including the residents of Kamiki Village and Shinshu Field. Their faith in her is strong and she has all of her Brush techniques, so she is at the height of her power. To counterbalance this, the demons inhabiting the area as well as the cursed zone itself will all be substantially stronger. Essentially, it will be like progressing through the game on Expert Mode.
